Denis Law's heartbreaking words on 'silent killer' in health battle before death
Manchester United legend Denis Law has sadly passed away at the age of 84, after the 'King of the Stretford End' battled dementia in recent years according to his family
Manchester United and Scotland footballing hero Denis Law has died at the age of 84.
Affectionately dubbed 'The King' by fans at Old Trafford, Law was a titan for United, netting 237 goals over an illustrious 11-year tenure. His legendary status was cemented with a Ballon d'Or win and scoring one of the most iconic goals in Manchester derby history even if it was for the rival team. Law's family, including his wife Diana, with whom he has been for 62 years, started fundraising efforts for the Alzheimer's Society.
In 2023, Diana revealed the sad reality that Law's condition had progressed to the point where he no longer remembered his past achievements, stating: "Denis doesn't remember the past things, you live for today."
In a heartfelt statement released on Friday (January 17), his family said: "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you."
A Manchester United statement on social media read: "Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84."
They added: "Our deepest condolences go out to Denis's family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more," reports the Mirror.
Law had been open about his struggle with dementia after being diagnosed in 2021. At 81, he shared his battle with Alzheimer's and vascular dementia.
This tragic condition also affected fellow United legends Nobby Stiles and Sir Bobby Charlton, who both passed away following their own fights with degenerative brain diseases in 2020 and 2023 respectively.
After his diagnosis, Law shared: "This will not be an easy journey especially for the people who love you the most. I know the road ahead will be hard, demanding, painful and ever changing and so ask for understanding and patience.
"I recognise how my brain is deteriorating and how my memory evades me when I don't want it to and how this causes me distress in situations that are beyond my control.
"I do understand what is happening and that is why I want to address my situation now whilst I am able, because I know there will be days when I don't understand and I hate the thought of that right now."
He also expressed his resolve to keep supporting his team, saying: "I am determined to continue" watching United, and added, "I have good days and bad days and aim to take each day as it comes adjusting my lifestyle accordingly."
