Dublin has been placed under a Status Yellow rain warning amid fears that snow could also hit.

Met Eireann has issued the warning for the capital, as well as Louth, Meath, Wexford, and Wicklow today. The national forecaster says rain will "become heavy at times and persistent" with a risk of spot flooding.

The warning kicks into effect at 9pm tonight, and will last until 2pm on Wednesday. Meanwhile, weather experts have said that there could be some "decent accumulations" of snow this evening as well in the mountains.

Weather Alerts Ireland wrote: "Some rain will push in to the East later today bringing a risk of localised flooding. On higher ground though snow is forecast!

"On the Wicklow Mountains some decent accumulations are likely as low as 500 metres!" And Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather said that there is "no sign" of any heat coming back to the capital in the near future.

He said: "No sign of any real heat returning to Ireland in next 7-10 days as upper air temperature forecast here shows. Risk of heavy rain Friday but less rainfall expected after Friday with just April showers.

"Could see some snow on Wicklow Mountains tonight too."
